PROJECTS!!!

OMG. So the spouse had a procedure during finals week on May 12th. Ever since we’ve been doing projects around the house. It’s SO MUCH.

Let me tell you about this week, not all of them, but just the last few days.

Of Friday I went to help my mom. She called and asked if i could take her to an appointment. No other details, because why would I need them? As I was hanging up, she slipped in, maybe afterwards we could run errands.

Yep, that tracts.

Well, the appointment at 11am last Friday, was her realtor. She’s been trying to sell the farm and it was supposed to finalize at the end of April. The people who bought the farm were having issues selling their place in Georgia. Well, last Friday they were selling and buying. My mom was signing the final papers with the title company. (Not as quick of a process as I’d thought!)

BUT, the buyers were selling their place at 3:30, a few hours later, so we had time.

COSTCO RUN, and I needed to pick up my son. We also had lunch, and the spouse joined us. Apparently the water heater had a malfunction … a new project!

(other projects were fixing the sink, the toilet, the living room light, which involved taking that one down and doing rewiring, the window blind which is automatic, more rewiring, … I feel like I missing a few…)

Well, back to my mom, we got to the bank an hour plus before close. The first woman told Mom to sign the check … but then there was an issue. She got someone higher up. The check was signed to a trust. (No! 😱)

It took about an hour to realize there was nothing we could do. WHY? Memorial day weekend. No one was still in their offices. Oh, and my mom proudly didn’t bring her phone along.

We rescheduled to Tuesday.

My mom didn’t bring her phone again. I know, I should’ve asked her. Why didn’t I? I don’t know.

She’d printed out the papers for the trust … but not all of them. The banker, who was very nice, offered to extend our appointment so we could drive back to my mom’s new place to get her phone. (It was good that he though she and I were hilarious. We are, by the way!)

At her house, she went in and I waited in the care. 2 minutes. 4 minutes. 5 minutes. I went in. She was looking at her phone with a magnified glass. FFS. She wanted to know if the correct form was in the email she had. It was. We got BACK to the bank, and 55 minutes later everything was done.

The banker had scheduled a 30 minute meeting originally and it only took an hour and 45 minutes to finally get the damn check deposited! PHEW!

And so (almost) ends, adventures with Mom.

No, this isn’t much different than my life growing up.

During one of my drives I told her about a friend having issues with their husband who wasn’t supporting their transition. Mom said, “What’s to agree with? If a person is trans, it’s who they are.”

This is also how I was brought up.

Anyway, I’ve started a YouTube channel where I’m documenting writing the new dystopian werewolf book. If you want to follow along, here are two videos that give you an idea about what I’m doing.

My channel is very very small, and I’d love for it to grow. Please follow and share!

Also, The Chameleon’s Duplicity comes out this weekend!

A New Journey

Hi Friends,

The semester is finally over!

Photo by Craig Adderley on Pexels.com

I am so happy to be done this year. It was a hard year for so many different reasons.

I planned on posting videos about writing the dystopian werewolf story … and I still do, it has just been stalled. I do hope to get back to it. With the videos, I may even make progress.

Though The Chameleon’s Duplicity doesn’t come out until the end of the month, I have copies of it now. I ALSO have decided to off several of my books at an even bigger discount on my website. If you’re in the US, check on the prices on paperback book. The prices include my signing the books and shipping.

Page for discount books for Pride! https://huckleberryauthor.com/discount-books-for-pride/

Beyond that I’m doing a bunch of different events this summer. I’m doing TWO pride fests in June, the MKE Pride Market on June 13th and the Big Gay Market on June 19th – 21st.

I’ll let you know as more things come up!

A Bit of Magick!

I bought a book on how to do newsletters the right way. I haven’t read it yet … but I DID buy it. That is what we call progress.

We are at the end of the semester, and as always, that means I convert my life from teacher to author. I have one more week, but with the number of markets and events coming up, you’d never know!

So, let’s get down to business!

The Chameleon’s Duplicity ARCs went out last week … this week? Well, at some point in the last 10 days. All the days have kind of meshed together for me, so I’m not exactly sure when I set the eBook out into the world, I just know that it’s happened.

The Cameleon's Duplicity by Huckleberry Rahr. Book 2 of the Hidden Magick series
The Chameleon’s Duplicity

I’ve started thinking about what I want to write next. It’s complicated because I’m still trying to get my head around fixing the third book in the Hidden Magick series. I’ve been putting it on the back burner while I work to get to finals, but since that’s next week, I really don’t have an excuse.

Just like the books title: Truth Exposed … my truth is exposed, and I’ll need to get on it … soon!

I think while I’m working to get that book cleaned up, I’ll start dipping my toe into the dystopian werewolf book, that has no name. I’m open to suggestions. In reality, I’m open to many things. I think I’ve mentioned before: if you have a name you want included in a book, now is the time to let me know! A location? A title? (book or otherwise), I’m in the planning stages, something needed in dystopian despite my avoidance of the practice.

Now, onto something more plesant!

Tomorrow I’ll be at Nobel Knights Game shop for an event that runs from 9am to 4pm. I’m very excited. The store is in my town, so getting there is super easy. It’s also an indoor event, so I won’t freeze. This is all very thrilling to me.

Doesn’t that look like something you’d LOVE to be a part of? I know I’m super happy to be going.

As for NEXT weekend, well, I’ll be in Sun Prairie, also dangerously close to home, at an outdoor event. I’d again, love to see all of you there.

This market is HUGE! So many venders and food carts … FOOD CARTS, and I’m located pretty close to them. Things are getting better and better.

Anyway, beyond writing and vending, I’m deciding on walking or biking for a summer distraction. What do y’all suggest? What would be a goal to set? Let me know.

April Showers… 🌦️🌈📚

I could hope for a shower of sales, but alas, the only showers I got were the literal ones. Wisconsin had some fun weather: hail, thunderstorms, rain, freezing cold back to back to summer warm.

I’ve spent a lot of time working on three projects:

  1. my paid job. I know, silly of me. Finals are soon, so that will take the back burner come May 15th. (Maybe the 14th if I’m really on top of grading finals)
  2. Editing the second of the Hidden Magick Series. Yep, it is all edited and I’m about to format. That means I need ARC readers. Send me a note if you want to be part of the team!
  3. brainstorming a new series … dystopian werewolves. Thoughts? Anyone want their name in the series? I really don’t love coming up with names.

I would love for The Chameleon’s Duplicity to come out at the end of May. If you’d like to be part of the ARC team, I’ll probably have the eBooks out in the next 1 – 2 days.

May is just around the corner. I haven’t written any short stories, but maybe I’ll include one in May. If I start that new dystopian, maybe I’ll drop some of my beginning musing on that one here. I am debating creating either TikTok or YouTube videos on my beginning to end process of the first book. Thoughts?

The Break! 💜😍

It is the end of spring break. I know, I set a lot of things to happen during spring break in my books, which is why I hole up in my house avoiding the big bad world. Maybe I should switch things up, go to Florida, and try to find a panther or something crazier. Things could become a lot more interesting!

A person reaching out to touch a mythical creature. An eclipsed sun is in the background.

I spent a lot of the last week going through the comments and edits of The Chameleon’s Duplicity and Truth Exposed, books two and three of The Hidden Magick series.

The Chameleon’s Duplicity is scheduled to publish on May 30th! I know, I am really excited as well. All three books are up on Amazon, have pages on my website, and are quickly becoming a reality. I don’t have a ton of ratings or reviews for Aura of the Chameleon, yet. If you’ve read it and are comfortable, I would love for you to leave your thoughts. It isn’t really for me, it is for other readers to know if they should venture into my dystopian world. It would also let me know if I should continue writing dystopian books. I do have one primed and ready to go, but I also have other ideas, so if it isn’t my forte, I can take a hint.

The citizens are happy when the government has all the control.

School starts up next week for me and the boy, the youngest. I didn’t get much done for prepping, but that’s probably okay, none of my students probably did much work either, so we’re even!

My son’s birthday is coming up, so of course the baking has begun. I made fudge puddles: chocolate chip cookies, made into little cups, filled with chocolate ganache. As for any more baking, we will see.

Living in Wisconsin, the weather has been bouncing between the 60s (low 20sC) and back down to the 30s-40s (0C-10C). It makes figuring out what to wear and which coat very tricky. Then there is the rain and wind. You have to love spring!

I hope you all are enjoying the end of March!

Spring Has Sprung!

We are trudging through March, and what a month it is. In my neck of the woods, we had a blizzard last weekend, and it’s 73F (23C) today! Wisconsin is just wacky!

I would go out and enjoy the weather, but I am heading out with A.R. Grimes to see if we can convince people they want to purchase our goods. We’re going to a makers market! These are always exciting and worrisome. Will people want books? Will they want OUR books? Who knows. It is also very fun. I do like talking with people.

We got to set up last night, so I get to have a bit of a relaxed morning. It is 5:30am. If had to set up this morning, I’d be off to Sun Prairie now. The setup has to be done by 8:30am and doors open for venders at 6am. All our fans can show up at 9am. I’m sure many fans will be beating down the door! 😱🤣🤣

If you’re in the area, here are the details. 608 Market at Heartland. 800 Wilburn Road, Sun Prairie, WI. From 9am – 3pm! And yes, I have copies of Aura of the Chameleon!!

I guess that means my next piece of information is, Aura of the Chameleon is out in the world. I have received a few review and a few ratings. Nothing much. If you read it, please rate it. Or, if you want to be a hero, review it! It is appreciated by me and other readers.

Book two is almost done with the editor and book three is being heavily critiqued. The writing machine is fully in swing.

As for what is next. I was challenged with “dystopian” and “werewolves.” The words have been battling it out in my head for the last week. As to what comes of it … we will see!

I hope all of you are doing well as the seasons change.

Government Love! 📚🌈💜😱

And a new cover!

Aura of the Chameleon comes out this week!

Aura of the Chameleon book in three formats, book, tablet, and on a phone
Aura of the Chameleon in three formats.

Does my cover look different? As I ordered covers for book 2 and 3, I decided to add a bit of purple to the cover. it was a whole thing. Anyway, new cover done. Book ready to go live. And I have a review!! I know, I’m super excited. Check it out!

This reviewer has given me many 4-star reviews, so I was thrilled to see that she gave me a 5-star review on this series!

The best editor in the world is currently editing book 2. I don’t know about book 3 since it hasn’t been critiqued. Once this trilogy is done, I haven’t decided what I’ll work on next. But whatever it is, I’m sure it will be fun. I am certainly open to suggestion. (No, I’m not going back to the Jade universe)

As for events, I’ll be attending the 608 market on March 21st at 800 Wilburn Road in Sun Prairie, WI. If anyone is available, I’d love to see you!

Exciting Update

Hi my friends! I had a goal to send a newsletter out every week. I know, I didn’t succeed. It is the start of the semester, week 5? 6? I guess we’re nearing the middle! Oy Vey! time! I was hoping to get more feedback on the short stories. So, I will start off with a few questions:

Do you enjoy the short stories? Should I continue them? And if so, should I focus on book series? Or just pick shorts that are unrelated to Jade, Ember, and in a month, Ivy and Petra.

I have gotten Aura of the Chameleon back from the editor. I’ll, hopefully, be formatting this weekend and sending the ARCs out by Sunday. I’m really excited about this new series coming out in March. Everyone who’s read it seems to enjoy it … even the AI emails who’ve been touched by Ivy and Petra’s story pre-publication! You’ve gotta love a good spam-artist, no?

Aura of the Chameleon as eBook in tablet, kindle, and as paperback book.
Aura of the Chameleon.

I’ve finally ordered covers for book 2 and 3 in the series. I’m excited to see what the designers come up with. Once this series is fully out, we’ll see what happens next!

Upcoming Events:

March 21 – 608 Market – Sun Prairie, WI

May 16 – 608 Market – Sun Prairie, WI

  • There are more, but they are in August!

❤️😍Love is in the Air … and FIRE! 🔥🔥🔥

It is the beginning of the month of cold and sadness.

Okay, it isn’t THAT bad, but walking around campus has been cold. My new classes have been good. I always miss a few classes from the previous semester, but I think this semester will be good.

The new semester for fall just dropped and I’m not sure how that will go. 18 credits of meh! Okay, maybe I can see the future. That’s it, I need my books and author career to TAKE OFF so that I don’t have to teach that schedule!

I have a friend I talk with most mornings and she teased me that in her neck of the woods it was 55 degrees F (so about 10C) So much warmer than it’s been. A veritable heat wave. For most of this week we’ve been in the 20s (just below zero C), which is better than the negatives of last week, especially with the wind. (The translation to C is just too painful!)

I’m only in the second week of classes, but I’m already behind in grading. Wish me luck everyone!

So, in this newsletter, I’ve decided to switch my focus from Jade to Ember. If you remember, the last book ends with Ember and Fotia heading to classes in their twelfth year. This short story picks up on that very same day!

Enjoy!

Huckle

If you’re behind in any of these books and want to know what they hay is going on, don’t forget, you can get any of the books here, on my website! No Amazon involved! And I’ll even sign them!

New short story … spoilers if you haven’t read: Veiled Phoenix, Moonstone Phoenix, and Battle Phoenix.

In The Hot Seat

Ember

Ember loved their champagne robe with its gold fire shaped embellishments along the bottom. Walking out to the east field made them feel important. Mr. Tine, the fire magic instructor, requested they arrive early so that the former Ring of Fire members could speak with them. He also wanted them there as part of the visual spectacle the new hopefuls would see as they left the building and approached the testing field.

This testing was so important that Mr. Tine secured a pass from Ember’s last class of the day, so they could spend time for the meet and greet. Speaking with the magical fire leaders of the community was a bit intimidating, but their time helping Ambrose restructure INFINITE Wisdom helped.

The testing would begin directly at the end of classes.

As the meet and greet came to an end, Ember thought about the afternoon. Twenty fourth-year fire magic students had been invited to show something beyond what they’d learned in class. If what they showed was impressive enough, they may be invited into the Ring of Fire club, one of the most prestigious clubs in the school. The members often went on to win scholarships to colleges as well as afterwards becoming leaders in the community.

As much as it excited Ember to witness the twenty potential members coming out to show everyone their fancy magic, they didn’t realize how lonely it would be to sit alone. They weren’t sitting with the spectators or the judging panel. Moreover, they were the only returning member of Ring of Fire. Eleventh year students didn’t often make it into the club.

Shortly after the school day ended, students began flowing from the building. Ember smiled wide as they saw Olivia, one of their best friends and Fotia, their cousin. Though Ember knew all the twelfth-year students, there were several eleventh-year potentials who had been invited to observe the testing. It was during Ember’s observation of the testing that they ended up earning a robe of their own.

“Welcome!” Mr. Tine’s voice boomed out. “If you’ll all come and sit to my left, testers and hopefuls both .” Once everyone sat, he nodded. “As many of you know, the audience is filled with former Ring of Fire members, some as recent as our latest graduates and other members who graduated—”

“You don’t have to age us, Cyrus!” An older woman in the back shook her fist in the air, but she smiled at Mr. Tine, taking the heat from her words.

“Right. Very well. Let me introduce our hopefuls.” It took several minutes, but he went through and listed off all twenty students. “We’ll begin with Zigmund.”

A thicker student with unruly brown curls stood. In the back row, Ambrose rolled her eyes, as if nothing this student could do would impress her.

I bet she wanted to go first.

Zigmund stepped away from the others, lifted his hand, palm up, then rotated his hand to make a circle. Between the students and spectators, a literal ring of fire appeared. The ring floated a few feet above everyone’s heads and maybe two feet in diameter.

The ring was okay, but nothing too flashy.

Zigmund nodded slowly, then sat.

Mr. Tine looked at the ring, then the first hopeful. “Are you done?”

“Well, I’m not doing more with the ring, sir, but I’d like to let it remain while you continue.”

Mr. Tine’s eyes narrowed. “Is this why you requested to go first? A minor test of complexity, but then couple that with time?”

One of Zigmund’s brows rose and he bobbed a shoulder, as if to say, ‘duh.’

“Very well, Ambrose, you are next.”

A smirk spread across the bully’s face. She slowly stood and rolled her shoulders back, settling her body into a perfect position. Her hands rolled out from palms down to facing the sky. Then she snapped them to face each other as if they held a small pillow.

When her hands snapped up, an oblong ball of fire formed in the center of the testing area. Ambrose began pulsing her hands in and out, and the fire moved with her.

Curious, Ember switched her vision to watch. The magic flowed well from Ambrose to the ball of fire, being manipulated like a ball of goo, but it wasn’t smooth. Ember had offered to help, but Ambrose declined.

Not wanting to tire her vision out, Ember went back to normal vision as Ambrose rotated her hands up, thumbs pointing down, as if she were cracking a large egg. The blob of fire formed a heart. Once there, Ambrose wiggled her middle fingers, and the heart pulsated out, like a Valentine’s heart emoji.

Then the fire dissipated and Ambrose sat. Her smile said she knew no one could out do her.

The next student threw a fire ball so far it was hard to see the speck of light, then he pulled it back.

Ember wanted to be impressed with everyone, but that wasn’t that great, and the next few got worse. The only thing that was interesting was watching the audience watch Zigmund’s ring, which hadn’t moved, or shrunk, at all.

“Our next student is Olivia.”

Ember jerked, suddenly giddy.

“Hi, everyone. If you’ll give me a second.”

Behind her, Ambrose rolled her eyes.

“Zigmund, I was wondering if you could move your ring to the center. I was hoping to utilize it for my bit.”

The boy, once again, just lifted a shoulder. His hand waved and the ring moved a few feet to take center stage. He barely seemed to notice his magic at all.

Olivia smiled wide. “Thank you.”

She created a fireball. Then, lifting one hand, slightly clasped, she rotated a quarter turn with her palm moving towards the sky. The ball flew towards the ring’s center. Just as it reached the ring, Olivia squeezed her bottom two fingers while flicking her pointer finger.

The ball morphed into a bird, wings flapping and flew over the audience. Once it reached the top of the school it disappeared.

When everyone turned back to the stage, the ring had returned to its starting place and Olivia sat in her seat.

Mr. Tine stood. “Next we have Fotia. I’ll remind all of you that we do allow phoenixes into the Ring of Fire. This time we can see the testing from the beginning.”

Fotia blushed more red than her hair. She stood. Ember had worked with her. Though the others didn’t know it, she wanted to learn something new. She held out a hand and created three roses, one red, one pink, and the last one purple. She pulled out the purple rose, walked over to Ember and handed it over. “For our resident Ring of Fire member.”

Ember smiled. “Thank you.”

In a blink, all three roses disappeared.

There were four more students. Ember was tired and tried to focus. It was more fun to watch Ambrose who had to know her show wasn’t the best.

At the end, Mr. Tine stood. “We thank all of you for joining us. The judging panel will meet and decide who will make it in over the next few days.”

As he finished his words, the Ring of Fire finally blinked out.

January coming to an end

Hi Friends!

I hope you’re doing well! Please let me know what you think of the new short stories. I was hoping to hear last week, but no one said anything. Either you were shocked with the brilliance, or disappointed. I’m going to pretend it was the former!

Photo by Simon Berger on Pexels.com

Tonight is the last dinner out for the end of the month of birthday celebrations. I am excited for the celebrations. I do love January for the happy times, but oof, it has been cold.

School started and walking around campus has chilled me to the bone. In book 2 of Jade, she and Piper walk around UW-Whitewater campus. As they slog over a hill, Piper wondered what the hill would be like in winter. When I first started working at UW-Whitewater, I would trudge over that hill in winter, slipping and sliding. Summer, I attack it to get a bit more exercise. Well, not the hill is closed all winter to save on a bit of money and for safety.

In my last email, I mentioned the ARC, advanced reader copy, for the dystopian fantasy book coming out in just over a month. I’m not sure if anyone signed up, which is fine. I can’t track where people sign up from, but I do have a total of three people who signed up from the link, and two who have told me they want to continue from previous ARCs. If you were one of the three, thank you.

Short story #2

Totally Unprepared

Binium

“Dre, I’m scared.”

My sisters and I have two moms and two dads. We call our moms Mom and Mama, our dads, Dad and Dre, short for Padre, the Spanish word for dad. I don’t know how these names were decided, but it’s how it’s always been.

“Bini, you’re going to be great. Just like your sister and cousin. I’m just so proud of you for keeping your epsilon secret for so long.” He slid his arm around my shoulder and squeezed.

Tonight would be the first night my sister Esperanza, my cousin Soren, and I would shift to wolves and run with the pack. Before I gave the secret of the animals away a few months ago, only Mom and I knew. “I still feel bad for blurting that out in front of everyone.” I slumped. “Annie just wouldn’t stop complaining.”

Dre’s arm tightened. “No one is mad at you, Bini. You calmed your sister down, and that was really well done. And now, I have a big job for you to do.”

My stomach clenched. I wasn’t sure I was up to doing anything more. “Are you sure it’s something I can do?”

His smile warmed me to my core. Dre could always make me feel strong and important. “Of course. I would like for you to speak with Annie and Soren’s wolves, find out if they’re ready to come out and play. I’d like to get the three of you out running early.”

The idea excited and terrified me. “Okay, yeah, I can do that.”

We got up from the couch, and I ran off to find the other two. It didn’t take long to find them in the basement playing on a gaming console. I wanted to take both their hands, but they were focused on their game and said ‘no’. Annie let me take her hand first.

Her grey wolf bounced up to me, as hyper as my sister. I loved the black star on her forehead. “Sis, are you ready to run in the sun with me?” I already knew my wolf was ready; it was just about finding out about the other two.

“Oh yes, yes, yes. Can we?” Her excitement made my black wolf run in circles, leaping in joy.

“Yes, let’s just find out if our cousin is ready, too.”

Once Annie was gone, I took Soren’s hand. I noted that the game was off. Apparently, heading out to our first run was more exciting than their game. Soren’s gray wolf soon joined my mindscape and just as quickly told me he was ready to run. The three of us scampered to the backyard, yelling to Dre on the way out that we were ready to go.

It wasn’t just Dre who met us in the backyard; Uncle Owen was there as well. His joyous personality made me smile, though the extra person was worrisome. “Dre, why is Uncle Owen here?”

Uncle Owen came over and ruffled my hair. “Someone has to run with you lot. José here has to be available for everyone else, which means I get to play with all of you.”

“Who wants to shift first?” Dre smiled at us, searching each of our faces. As bold as Annie was, her eyes looked wild. Soren stepped behind his dad.

With a shrug, I stepped forward. “Me. I’ll do it.”

We headed to the center of the yard, away from the others. “Okay, son, you’re going to need to strip down. I know you know this, and it’s uncomfortable, but you’ll get used to it.”

“It helps that everyone here is close family.” Despite my words, I turned from the others, stripped, and got to my hands and knees. I wasn’t really sure about anything beyond that. Werewolf training didn’t start until we got older. The pack tried to start with us once I announced our wolves were ready, but three months really wasn’t enough time, and we had school during the days.

Dre knelt down next to me. “Okay, Bini, things are going to be uncomfortable. This first time will be the hardest, but don’t worry, once your wolf comes out, you’ll understand.” He leaned down, placed his hand on my forehead, and his voice became somehow more. “Binium Cortez-Green, welcome to the pack,” his eyes bore into me, “come out … now.”

My body cramped. Bile filled my mouth as my stomach tried to crawl up, and my shoulders shimmied down. Then pain took over, and I nearly blacked out. Things retreated, then I heard cracking, and I wished I could pass out. After what seemed like hours, anger overtook me, and I wanted to attack.

In front of me stood a man, tall with dark hair and eyes. Snarling, I leapt.

He laughed at me, wrapping his hands around my snout, denying my bite. Loud, sharp sounds came from my left, and I wanted to snap. Lower sounds pressed into my ears, and I trembled.

Then I heard words. “It’s okay, Binium, you’re doing great.”

Everything came back to me, and I dropped to my belly. I was a wolf. Gazing around, I realized not only were my sister and cousin there, clapping, but my mom, mama, and dad were there as well.

And I was a wolf.

Slinking back from Dre’s hold, I shot to my feet and howled to the sky in my elation.
