❤️😍Love is in the Air … and FIRE! 🔥🔥🔥

It is the beginning of the month of cold and sadness.

Okay, it isn’t THAT bad, but walking around campus has been cold. My new classes have been good. I always miss a few classes from the previous semester, but I think this semester will be good.

The new semester for fall just dropped and I’m not sure how that will go. 18 credits of meh! Okay, maybe I can see the future. That’s it, I need my books and author career to TAKE OFF so that I don’t have to teach that schedule!

I have a friend I talk with most mornings and she teased me that in her neck of the woods it was 55 degrees F (so about 10C) So much warmer than it’s been. A veritable heat wave. For most of this week we’ve been in the 20s (just below zero C), which is better than the negatives of last week, especially with the wind. (The translation to C is just too painful!)

I’m only in the second week of classes, but I’m already behind in grading. Wish me luck everyone!

So, in this newsletter, I’ve decided to switch my focus from Jade to Ember. If you remember, the last book ends with Ember and Fotia heading to classes in their twelfth year. This short story picks up on that very same day!

Enjoy!

Huckle

If you’re behind in any of these books and want to know what they hay is going on, don’t forget, you can get any of the books here, on my website! No Amazon involved! And I’ll even sign them!

New short story … spoilers if you haven’t read: Veiled Phoenix, Moonstone Phoenix, and Battle Phoenix.

In The Hot Seat

Ember

Ember loved their champagne robe with its gold fire shaped embellishments along the bottom. Walking out to the east field made them feel important. Mr. Tine, the fire magic instructor, requested they arrive early so that the former Ring of Fire members could speak with them. He also wanted them there as part of the visual spectacle the new hopefuls would see as they left the building and approached the testing field.

This testing was so important that Mr. Tine secured a pass from Ember’s last class of the day, so they could spend time for the meet and greet. Speaking with the magical fire leaders of the community was a bit intimidating, but their time helping Ambrose restructure INFINITE Wisdom helped.

The testing would begin directly at the end of classes.

As the meet and greet came to an end, Ember thought about the afternoon. Twenty fourth-year fire magic students had been invited to show something beyond what they’d learned in class. If what they showed was impressive enough, they may be invited into the Ring of Fire club, one of the most prestigious clubs in the school. The members often went on to win scholarships to colleges as well as afterwards becoming leaders in the community.

As much as it excited Ember to witness the twenty potential members coming out to show everyone their fancy magic, they didn’t realize how lonely it would be to sit alone. They weren’t sitting with the spectators or the judging panel. Moreover, they were the only returning member of Ring of Fire. Eleventh year students didn’t often make it into the club.

Shortly after the school day ended, students began flowing from the building. Ember smiled wide as they saw Olivia, one of their best friends and Fotia, their cousin. Though Ember knew all the twelfth-year students, there were several eleventh-year potentials who had been invited to observe the testing. It was during Ember’s observation of the testing that they ended up earning a robe of their own.

“Welcome!” Mr. Tine’s voice boomed out. “If you’ll all come and sit to my left, testers and hopefuls both .” Once everyone sat, he nodded. “As many of you know, the audience is filled with former Ring of Fire members, some as recent as our latest graduates and other members who graduated—”

“You don’t have to age us, Cyrus!” An older woman in the back shook her fist in the air, but she smiled at Mr. Tine, taking the heat from her words.

“Right. Very well. Let me introduce our hopefuls.” It took several minutes, but he went through and listed off all twenty students. “We’ll begin with Zigmund.”

A thicker student with unruly brown curls stood. In the back row, Ambrose rolled her eyes, as if nothing this student could do would impress her.

I bet she wanted to go first.

Zigmund stepped away from the others, lifted his hand, palm up, then rotated his hand to make a circle. Between the students and spectators, a literal ring of fire appeared. The ring floated a few feet above everyone’s heads and maybe two feet in diameter.

The ring was okay, but nothing too flashy.

Zigmund nodded slowly, then sat.

Mr. Tine looked at the ring, then the first hopeful. “Are you done?”

“Well, I’m not doing more with the ring, sir, but I’d like to let it remain while you continue.”

Mr. Tine’s eyes narrowed. “Is this why you requested to go first? A minor test of complexity, but then couple that with time?”

One of Zigmund’s brows rose and he bobbed a shoulder, as if to say, ‘duh.’

“Very well, Ambrose, you are next.”

A smirk spread across the bully’s face. She slowly stood and rolled her shoulders back, settling her body into a perfect position. Her hands rolled out from palms down to facing the sky. Then she snapped them to face each other as if they held a small pillow.

When her hands snapped up, an oblong ball of fire formed in the center of the testing area. Ambrose began pulsing her hands in and out, and the fire moved with her.

Curious, Ember switched her vision to watch. The magic flowed well from Ambrose to the ball of fire, being manipulated like a ball of goo, but it wasn’t smooth. Ember had offered to help, but Ambrose declined.

Not wanting to tire her vision out, Ember went back to normal vision as Ambrose rotated her hands up, thumbs pointing down, as if she were cracking a large egg. The blob of fire formed a heart. Once there, Ambrose wiggled her middle fingers, and the heart pulsated out, like a Valentine’s heart emoji.

Then the fire dissipated and Ambrose sat. Her smile said she knew no one could out do her.

The next student threw a fire ball so far it was hard to see the speck of light, then he pulled it back.

Ember wanted to be impressed with everyone, but that wasn’t that great, and the next few got worse. The only thing that was interesting was watching the audience watch Zigmund’s ring, which hadn’t moved, or shrunk, at all.

“Our next student is Olivia.”

Ember jerked, suddenly giddy.

“Hi, everyone. If you’ll give me a second.”

Behind her, Ambrose rolled her eyes.

“Zigmund, I was wondering if you could move your ring to the center. I was hoping to utilize it for my bit.”

The boy, once again, just lifted a shoulder. His hand waved and the ring moved a few feet to take center stage. He barely seemed to notice his magic at all.

Olivia smiled wide. “Thank you.”

She created a fireball. Then, lifting one hand, slightly clasped, she rotated a quarter turn with her palm moving towards the sky. The ball flew towards the ring’s center. Just as it reached the ring, Olivia squeezed her bottom two fingers while flicking her pointer finger.

The ball morphed into a bird, wings flapping and flew over the audience. Once it reached the top of the school it disappeared.

When everyone turned back to the stage, the ring had returned to its starting place and Olivia sat in her seat.

Mr. Tine stood. “Next we have Fotia. I’ll remind all of you that we do allow phoenixes into the Ring of Fire. This time we can see the testing from the beginning.”

Fotia blushed more red than her hair. She stood. Ember had worked with her. Though the others didn’t know it, she wanted to learn something new. She held out a hand and created three roses, one red, one pink, and the last one purple. She pulled out the purple rose, walked over to Ember and handed it over. “For our resident Ring of Fire member.”

Ember smiled. “Thank you.”

In a blink, all three roses disappeared.

There were four more students. Ember was tired and tried to focus. It was more fun to watch Ambrose who had to know her show wasn’t the best.

At the end, Mr. Tine stood. “We thank all of you for joining us. The judging panel will meet and decide who will make it in over the next few days.”

As he finished his words, the Ring of Fire finally blinked out.

Happy Holidays! 🌈🥰📚❄️

Christmas morning I sat amongst my gifts and copious amounts of sugars watching celebrity family feud. It was Olympic gymnasts battling against each other and the question was, give a word to replace a swear word.

Steve Harvey looked utterly baffled. He said that his family would get three strikes in three answers! Every answer seemed to confuse him more. His reactions amused me.

When it got to the last answer, the team who were answering, had no idea. I had an answer, but wasn’t convinced (sugar). Both teams couldn’t get the last one. It was sugar. I had a student years ago who used sugar ALL the time!

I’m not sure why this amused me as much as it did! I don’t think I use many of these in my book, but if you ever feel like you need a swear replacement, here you go!

I believe in my NEXT newsletter I’ll have a call for ARC readers for Aura of the Chameleon. I may have said that last time, but we all know that December is a bit of a hard month. So far, everyone who’s read the book, loves it … which brings me much joy.

As we enter, as Jade would call, the blursdays of the year … when the lucky among us can get lost in the featureless days between Christmas and New years, I offer you a few places to grab free books. These are not books with newsletter sign ups, these are free books, available on sites like Amazon.

As it goes, I didn’t put any of my books on these pages, well, none of my books under my real name, but I do have friends who have books available in these book blasts. You can find many great books by amazing authors. Do note the days the books are available.

And for the love that is all I can ask, be gentle with the end of 2025. So much has happened, we don’t need anything big happening for the next week. We don’t need a big huzzah to bring in 2026. Let’s all be quiet and calm.

Reading is good.

Another One Bites The Dust!

I’m not sure if I’m talking about November, the last book I wrote, the last book I read, or the semester I’m teaching which ends in two weeks.

We are at the start of many endings.

I recently posted this-what would you be? Does that make you happy? Which of my books would you want to end up in?

I am part of a group of authors who are doing a reader party this week. Each day, for the next 5 days, this facebook page will have authors playing games and giving away prizes. If you’re on facebook, you should come and join us!

https://www.facebook.com/groups/853369609747267/

I recently critiqued the second book in the Legacy Series by Elizabeth Daly. Her first book Legacy Bound is amazing, if you haven’t ready it, you should.

As December begins, I’ll be starting an advent calendar, 24 days of baking. Okay, I started it a couple of weeks ago because I didn’t want to bake every day. I’m not sure why I wanted to play with advent calendars this year, but I did. Anyone else?

What is your favorite bake?

Friend or Foe? 📚😱🌈

Hi all!

It has been quite a few months! This semester has been trying to kick my butt! For over a month I’ve been planning to send a newsletter out, but it just hasn’t happened for a slew of reasons. I’ll be better, I promise!!

If you look over my website, I’ve updated a few things. The home page now highlights Aura Of The Chameleon. I just sent her to the editor. I KNOW!!!! 😱🥰

I’ve spent the last few weeks writing the third book in the series, which means, if everything goes as planed, the full series will drop in 2026. I’ll be asking for and ARC team soon, probably in the next month.

I told a good friend of mind that I won’t be writing anything else until at least 5 of the 11 (ELEVEN) written and unpublished books sitting about get out into the world. Some (most?) are written under my pen names, but I need to push these books out to readers.

My other big goal is marketing. (I say this a LOT.)

On December 19th I’ll be vending at the Big Gay Market in Madison, Wisconsin. I would love to see all of you!

My next newsletter will be soon, my friends.

If, you don’t want to receive these, please unsubscribe. My feelings will not be hurt.

Foolish week ahead!

I am so excited about this week. Well, no, I’m not, but I am! I just survived a week of spring break. Survived because lifting a box of early release copies of Xenagogue, I lost my balance and then my back hurt. Though, my back hurting isn’t really out of the ordinary.

So, if spring break was last week, why am I excited about next week? Well, there’s a birthday in the house, so I have an excuse to bake. Please don’t ask about my diet, it isn’t great. While out getting groceries today, I ran into someone with rainbow hair!!! I know, it was trippy. Now, I dyed my hair black back in January to get me to summer, so that will be a shock to some of you, but as Laura, the lovely lady with rainbow hair mentioned, I’m still full of rainbows in the inside!

  • me and Laura of the rainbow hair! She took a bookmark. She had the cutest family with her!!

What I’ve baked! The first is African Malva Pudding Cake. A family favorite. That second one is a s’mores blondie. It looks weird but it was tasty. The last picture is the mid-step in making fudge… it’s a dangerous process!

Next weekend I’ll make a sandwich cookie chocolate layered cake. Who knows what else will pop up… macaron cookies, pound cake (because we all need to put on more pounds!), and probably hot chocolate… he likes to drink it early and often!

Now, as you saw above, I have physical copies of Xenagogue. You are welcome to go ahead and order signed copies of any of my books from the website, INCLUDING Xenagogue! I know, super duper exciting. If you’d rather use paypal or venmo, just send a message and we can figure something out.

So, what’s new in the world of writing?

  • Obviously, Xenagogue is ready to be out in the world! It even has a few reviews on goodreads!
  • Veiled Phoenix will be at a sale price because of C.L. Cannon’s Fantasy & Sci-Fi Book Fair. Not only are there Free & Discounted books, there are prizes! Check it out!!
  • On April 11th, when Xenagogue releases, there will be an online release party on The Reading Lounge a facebook reader and author page. There will be a slew of authors playing games and giving away prizes. Come join in on the fun and see what you can win!
  • I’ve been going through the Yugen critiques and soon I’ll be calling for an ARC team. Pebble’s story is so fun! All of this brings me joy!

Happy almost April, my friends!

Huckle

Xenagogue – and more!

Well, we did it, it’s March! As the date says in a few days, March forth and buy books!

At the university where I work, students are, mostly, in the swing of things. Exams, homework, excuses, the works. I have my pattern of getting things done as well. I’m trying to stay on top of my work so I can write my new series. No one said any of this was easy, but it is fun!

Anyway, I sent the ARCs out for Xenagogue. If you signed up, please check your email. It will have come from bookfunnel, not me. That’s the site I can send eBooks out from. So far, the few people who’ve read it have given the story good reviews!

Xenagogue - book Book 1 of Pebble Stone Chronicles

Veiled Phoenix is part of an online book fair. This event goes on for over a month, and you can win prizes. You should go and check it out! Get discount and free books! What a deal.

check it out here: https://clcannon.net/bookfair/

Speaking of Veiled Phoenix, I’m pretty sure Battle Phoenix will be out in audio hopefully this week!

Let me know if you want me to email out the first chapter of the new book. It won’t be edited, but it could be fun!

Books and More Books

Hi my friends! I wanted to send this out last night, but it was Monday.

Let’s start at the beginning and work through all the fun and exciting news. First of all, I am about half way through editing Xenagogue! Yep, that means the editor got the manuscript back to me and I’m slogging through all their notes. Book 1 of Pebble is a reality!

Pre-Order Xenagogue
Xenagogue – Available April 11, 2025

Now, if you wanted to be an ARC reader, and just never signed up, here is your last chance. I’ll take applicants through February 27th. My goal is to send out the eBooks on March 1st, or maybe the 28th if I’m really on top of the ball! Sign up here.

Now, why might I NOT be on the ball, you ask? Teaching? Grading? Classes? Nope. I started a whole new series. A dystopian fantasy. Maybe I’ll send out the first chapter, what d’ya think?

As for our favorite phoenix, Ember, well her final story, Battle Phoenix, is out. You all knew this. The audiobook is in review. It’s been there since Friday. It takes up to ten days, so I expect, if you love audiobooks as much as I do, you’ll be able to listen to the story, soon!

Battle Phoenix - book 3 of the Ember Savita Chronicles.
Battle Phoenix – book 3 of the Ember Savita Chronicles.

Last, but very much not least, Year of Queer Lit has a free and $0.99 book event TOMORROW, the 26th of February. Wolf Healer is part of the event. She’ll be on sale for $0.99. If you want to go grab some amazing books, check out this website.

I am so happy to be part of this event!

It’s The Holiday Season! ❤️📚🎧🌲🍪

It is almost December. I know that I just sent out a newsletter, but there are a few important things I need to tell you.

First of all, I’ve updated my website. There were a few items that needed a bit of help, but I believe I have it mostly in working order. As always, websites are a work in progress.

Speaking of progress …

  • Battle Phoenix – I am hoping to get this out in December, ahead of Christmas. I don’t know if I can. I also don’t know if it happens, if the audio will be available at the same time.
  • The Pebble trilogy – It is set for 2025! I hope all of you are as excited as I am. I believe after Pebble, I will be stepping away from these characters and this world. Then again, I have thought that before, so I may be convinced otherwise.
  • Events – I never really know where or how to find events. I seems to fall into them by accident. I do have a few coming up, but again, it seems more random than planned. I had one at a mall, not my best plan. I have one coming up in a few weeks in Madison, Wisconsin – super excited about that.
    • December 1st – I’m joining a group of authors for a day of give aways on the Reading Lounge of facebook. Find the link on my author page on facebook.
    • December 2nd – 7th – I’m joining a group of authors who are doing a December Dash, promoting indie authors books to be bought from their websites as holiday gifts. You can get mine from here. I’ve updated the page to include the phoenix series, and is updateable for when Pebble’s series is done.
      • The full list of participating authors can be found here, but it doesn’t officially start until December second!
    • The Big Gay Holiday Market – December 20th – 21st.
      • The 20th is 18+ with fun adult themed events
      • The 21st, in the morning is mask only, and the rest of the day is for everyone.
      • Come get gifts for the whole family!!

I have a friend who has started a website to review books! I’d love for you to check it out here!

I have another friend who has been making crochet art to make ends meet. Their work is amazing! They are disabled and this has helped them to maintain independence. If you want to check out their online store for more Christmas Gift ideas, you’ll be nothing but happy with their work. Check it out here!

We got this for one cat, a second decided it was hers. What can you do? But, it kind of fits my mood the day after Thanksgiving! I SHOULD be getting stuff done, but, alas, the cat reflects my wants!

Cheers, everyone! An happy holiday season!!

Huckle ❤️🌈

Treat or — 📚🔥🔥🔥😘

Did you survive September? Did I?

The start of a new semester is always a challenge. New instructors, new students, new schedule, new classes, new … just new.

Because the weather in Wisconsin is nice, I’m still bopping around doing book events, so it really feels like I’m maintaining two jobs. I tell you, it’s a trip.

Okay, let’s talk books. Veiled Phoenix is out, but you know that, the book has been out since June. As has the audiobook. Moonstone Phoenix is out. They came into the world on September 27th. ACX, the biggest producers of audiobooks has been … special? challenging? exciting? frustrating? All of the above? Probably all of the above.

I actually have a few books held up in their QA maze and I can’t get a clear reason why they won’t release my stories. This isn’t the first time I’ve struggled with them and their odd requirements. I’m wondering if in the future they’ll deny my book because I didn’t perform the correct dance of their people. Don’t worry, I’ve been dancing up a storm!

As for the last book of the Ember Savita Trilogy, Battle Phoenix, I’m still hoping to move the publication date up to before Christmas of 2024. Wouldn’t that be nice? That would leave Pebble’s trilogy for 2025. (Did you notice you could pre-order Battle Phoenix AND all three of Pebble’s books??)

For those of you who have read my friend A.R. Grime’s series, Wyldling Dream, I thank you. The first two books, Wyldling Snare and Wyldling Trial are out and ready to be loved.

Well, Wyldling Armor is out (now?) Depends on when you’re reading this. It comes out on 10/8 (octopus day!). You should read this fantastic follow-up to the first two books, just check out this cover. We get to learn about more of the magic, both good and bad. There are three point of views, and one isn’t a hero! Getting into the mind of the villain is fantastic! More than that, LOOK AT THAT COVER!

If you are in Wisconsin. I’ll be at Studio Moonfall in Kenosha on October 12th. I’ll be there again 26th with A.R. Grimes if you want to get one of her books, signed.

I hope you’re having a great October, my friends, and I’ll have some great news for you in a week! Just you wait!!

Huckle

Exciting News! 📚😍😘🔥

Hi my friends! We are in the middle of August and things are happening!

For any of you of facebook, there is a new page for readers and indie authors that is very supportive of us authors, The Reading Lounge. Tomorrow, August 20th, they will be opening it’s virtual doors for the first time and during the day there will be a slew of games and book give aways! You should come check it out!

Please note, all those times are Eastern Standard Time. I’ll be closing out the night with a give away of Veiled Phoenix, though, if you have that book and are interested in Moonstone Phoenix, and are the winner, just let me know!

On Sunday, I’m back in Kenosha for the Kenosha Book Festival. I am so excited to be there. I always meet amazing people when I visit Kenosha, including the narrator to Veiled Phoenix!

On August 26th, I’ll be part of Year of Queer Lit – Stuff Your Kindle, which will offer a ton of free and $0.99 queer lit! I hope you’re as excited as I am!

I hope in all of this you found something you thought was fun and interesting!
